Paradise in Eden (Daily Portion 10115)
Scripture Passage:
Genesis 2:1-25 God rested on the seventh day after creation. He placed Adam in the garden of Eden. He gave him work to do, a restriction on eating one of the trees and a wife to help him.
What Does It Say?
- And God __________ the seventh day and ___________ it.
- These are the ______________ of the heavens and of the earth when they were created.
- The Lord brought out of the ground every tree that is ____________ to the sight and good for _________.
- A river went out of Eden and from thence parted into _________ heads.
- The Lord put Adam into a deep sleep and made a woman out of one of his __________.
What Does It Mean?
- God formed man of the dust, breathed into his nostrils the breath of life and he became a living soul (v.7). Many Bible students see the creation of man’s spirit in the breath of life; meaning man is composed of body, soul and spirit (as in 1 Thessalonians 5:23And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
See All...). How do you define the soul? What do you think the Bible refers to when it speaks of the soul? - When in the garden of Eden, Adam had only one restriction. He was not to eat of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil (v.17). What was the significance of this tree? Why did God place this tree in the garden?
- God saw that it was not good for Adam to be alone and determined to make a help meet for him (v.18). In this context, the word meet means fitting or just right for. Read carefully the words of this verse. What different purposes for marriage can you see here?
What Does It Mean to Me?
- Genesis 2:24Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.
See All... states, “Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.” Think beyond the physical. What all does a marriage do to the lives of the husband and wife. What has been created? What changes will be necessary? What does it mean to be one? - After God created Adam, He put him in the garden of Eden “to dress it and to keep it” (v.15). Adam was given work to do even in paradise. Work was not a result of the sin of man but is a leftover from the garden. Even in heaven, the Bible says of God, “his servants shall serve him” (Revelation 22:3And there shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and his servants shall serve him:
See All...). Therefore, work also continues after sin has been destroyed. What does this say about the importance of work? What is the good that God sees in work? How should this affect our attitude toward work?
