What Shall We Sing? - Colossians 3:16

INTRODUCTION

The Bible should be the final authority in all matters of faith and practice, not excluding the types of songs that should be sung. In fact, the Bible contains an entire book of songs, The Book of Psalms . According to Colossians 3:16, psalms is only one of three categories of songs to be sung by the New Testament believers. Basically put, psalms are scripture set to musick, hymns are doctrinal songs speaking specifically of the Lord, and spiritual songs deal with the Christian life and practice. A careful reading of the Bible will yield several evidences that God’s people have been singing songs from each of these categories throughout their history.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Sing these three songs and decide which is a psalm (a Bible verse word for word), which tells about God (hymn), and which tells you how to live (a spiritual song): Oh, Be Careful, God Is So Good, Jeremiah 33:3 .  
  • Much of the modern "Christian" musick focuses on self. How is this contrary to the godly categories of musick? Why should God’s people return to godly musick?
  • How can we use these categories to check our musick? What should we do if our musick does not fit into any of the categories listed in Colossians 3:16?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord for wisdom in singing the right kind of musick.
  • Ask God to help you know when your musick is ungodly.
