Understanding the Reading

Understanding the Reading - Acts 8:30

INTRODUCTION

Many people in the world foolishly judge the Bible because they cannot understand its contents. But, this should be expected as the Bible says, "the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned" (1 Corinthians 2:14). At times, even the saved may have difficulty understanding certain Bible passages, but God has given His Spirit to those who are saved to teach them and guide them in their understanding of His words. This truth is confirmed in John 14:26, when the Bible says, "the Comforter . . . shall teach you all things."

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) God wants you to understand His word. The Holy Spirit helps us (Nehemiah 9:20a; Psalm 32:8). Sometimes when people say they don't understand, it is because they don't want to do what God says (Isaiah 5:24b).
  • Do you ever have difficulty understanding what you read in the Bible? First of all, have you made sure of your salvation? Secondly, have you asked the Lord to help you as you read?
  • Why did the Eunuch have trouble understanding what he was reading? Why can the natural man not understand the things of God?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you understand as you read.
  • Ask God to give you a hunger for His word.
