Trusting in Vanity

Trusting in Vanity - Job 15:31

INTRODUCTION

When man trusts in nothing, he gets nothing in return. That is the point of Job 15:31. But, that is not the only truth being taught. It is also true that people should not trust in anything of little to no value. This would include beauty (Ezekiel 16:15; Proverbs 31:30), and riches (Psalm 62:10). Many in this world have come to trust in their intellect, beauty, and riches. The fruition of this is seen in the entertainment and business world, but the seeds of this troubling problem begins, most often, in early childhood. Young people often hear about the value of their appearance or their education in getting the things that these young people want most out of life.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) In his own heart, Paul thought he was serving God (Proverbs 28:26) by trying to do good works and keep God's laws. He was wrong (Psalm 39:5). The law points us to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Paul realized this later when he got saved (Philippians 3:4-7).
  • Do you, in any way, trust in your beauty to get what you want? Do you do this with family, friends, or at work? What true blessings have you received by trusting in vanity?
  • What are some other vain things in which people might trust? How do those things bring false results? How does this hurt us in the long run?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to help you realize when you are trusting in vanity.
  • Ask God to show you that He is the only One worthy of our trust.
