God’s Revelation to Man

INTRODUCTION: This psalm tells how God reveals truth to mankind and what the main emphasis of that message is. He has not left man without a witness, but has revealed himself to man in various ways. The two major ways given here are through creation and through the written scriptures.

  1. GOD’S MESSAGE IN THE HEAVENS (Psalm 19:1-6)
    1. A Clear Message (Psalm 19:1; Job 12:7-9)
      1. They declare who He is (Psalm 19:1a).
        1. He has personality (Romans 1:20).
          1. Seen in the order and beauty
          2. Note: Consider Romans 1:20; the glory of God matches His eternal power; the handiwork of God reveals an intelligent God.
        2. He is unchanging.
          1. Day/night
          2. Seasons
          3. Years
        3. He is just (Psalm 97:6).
          1. Light to all
          2. Darkness to all
          3. Rain to all (Acts 14:17)
        4. He is creator and judge (Psalm 50:6).
      2. They declare what He does (Psalm 19:1b).
        1. He creates – his handywork (Psalm 104:24).
        2. He preserves.
        3. He redeems.
        4. He completes.
        5. He gives light to man.
          1. The sun – a symbol of Himself (John 8:12; John 9:5)
          2. The stars – a symbol of angels
          3. The moon – a symbol of believers (Matthew 5:14)
    2. A Continual Message (Psalm 19:2)
      1. Day
        1. Day unto day; referring to the sun
        2. It utters speech.
      2. Night
        1. Night unto night; referring to the moon and stars
        2. They shew knowledge.
    3. A Universal Message (Psalm 19:3-4a)
      1. All languages (Psalm 19:3)
        1. No speech or language; Note: Language in no way affects the message of creation, but creation has affected language (see Chinese characters).
        2. Where their voice is not heard (Psalm 150:6)
      2. The whole world (Psalm 19:4a)
        1. Line through all the earth
        2. Words through the world
    4. A Focused Message (Psalm 19:4b-6)
      1. The sun’s tabernacle (Psalm 19:4b)
      2. The sun’s circuit (Psalm 19:5-6)
        1. God’s tabernacle for the sun (Psalm 19:4b)
        2. Comes out as a bridegroom from his chamber (Psalm 19:5)
        3. Rejoices as a strong man runs a race (Psalm 19:5)
        4. Its circuit goes to the ends of the heaven (Psalm 19:6).
        5. Nothing is hid from the heat of it (Psalm 19:6).
      3. Note: All things in creation are focused on the sun, showing the emphasis on the Son (Colossians 1:16), the Sun of righteousness (Malachi 4:2).
  2. GOD’S MESSAGE IN THE SCRIPTURES (Psalm 19:7-10)
    1. The Law of the Lord (Psalm 19:7a)
      1. It is perfect.
      2. It converts the soul.
    2. The Testimony of the Lord (Psalm 19:7b)
      1. It is sure.
      2. It makes the simple wise.
    3. The Statutes of the Lord (Psalm 19:8a)
      1. They are right.
      2. They rejoice the heart.
    4. The Commandment of the Lord (Psalm 19:8b)
      1. It is pure.
      2. It enlightens the eyes.
    5. The Fear of the Lord (Psalm 19:9a)
      1. It is clean.
      2. It endures for ever (Psalm 119:89).
    6. The Judgments of the Lord (Psalm 19:9b)
      1. They are true.
      2. They are righteous altogether.
    7. The Worth of the Scripture (Psalm 19:10)
      1. The value of scripture (Psalm 19:10a) – More desired than gold (Psalm 119:72, 127), and much fine gold
      2. The sweetness of scripture (Psalm 19:10b) - Sweeter than honey (Psalm 119:103) and the honeycomb
  3. GOD’S MESSAGE TO MANKIND (Psalm 19:11-14)
    1. God’s Purpose in Revelation (Psalm 19:11)
      1. To warn His servants against sin (Psalm 19:11a)
      2. To offer reward for obedience (Psalm 19:11b)
    2. God’s Reproof Against Sin (Psalm 19:12-13)
      1. Sins of ignorance – “Who can understand his errors?” (Psalm 19:12; Leviticus 4:27-28)
      2. Secret faults (Psalm 19:12; Psalm 90:8; Psalm 139:23-24)
      3. Presumptuous sins (Psalm 19:13; Exodus 21:14; Numbers 15:30-31; Deuteronomy 17:12-13)
        1. Deliverance from their dominion (Romans 6:12-14)
        2. A way to be upright
        3. Innocent of the great transgression
    3. God’s Reward for Faithfulness (Psalm 19:14)
      1. Our Faithfulness - Acceptable words and thoughts
      2. God’s reward – His strength and redemption
