Shipwreck on the Way to Rome (Daily Portion 10121)

Content Author:
Reagan, David
Scripture Passage:
Acts 27:1-25

In this passage, Paul is being transported as a prisoner from Caesarea to Rome. However, the ship on which he is sailing meets with trouble on the way.

What Does It Say?

  1. They stopped off at Sidon and Paul was given __________ to go unto his friends to ____________ himself.
  2. In Myra, the centurion found a ship of ______________ sailing into Italy.
  3. The men on the ship did not want to stay the winter at The Fair Havens because the haven was not _____________ to winter in.
  4. During the storm, they undergirded the ship because they feared that they might fall into _____________.
  5. At the height of their problems, Paul exhorted them to be of good ________ because God had shown him that no man’s ________ should be lost.

What Does It Mean?

  1. What picture is shown by the fact that the winds were contrary to them (v.4, 7)?  Compare this with Mark 6:48 and John 3:8.
  2. Some of these verses are filled with descriptions of the storm and the care of the ship.  Carefully read verses 15 through 19 and explain what is happening.  If you need to, look up unknown words in a dictionary.
  3. Paul had stand by him “the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve” (v.23).  Who do you think this is?  Why?

What Does It Mean to Me?

  1. Study verses 6 through 13.  How many errors can you find that were made that led to the loss of the ship in the storm?  How do these errors compare to the errors we often make in life that lead to personal shipwrecks?
  2. In the middle of the storm, “all hope that we should be saved was then taken away” (v.20).  Compare this with their attitude in verse 13.  How is this actually a step in the right direction?
