In this passage, Paul is being transported as a prisoner from Caesarea to Rome. However, the ship on which he is sailing meets with trouble on the way.

What Does It Say?

1. They stopped off at Sidon and Paul was given __________ to go unto his friends to ____________ himself.

What Does It Mean?

1. What picture is shown by the fact that the winds were contrary to them (v.4, 7)?  Compare this with Mark 6:48And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them.

2. Some of these verses are filled with descriptions of the storm and the care of the ship.  Carefully read verses 15 through 19 and explain what is happening.  If you need to, look up unknown words in a dictionary.
3. Paul had stand by him “the angel of God, whose I am, and whom I serve” (v.23).  Who do you think this is?  Why?

What Does It Mean to Me?

1. Study verses 6 through 13.  How many errors can you find that were made that led to the loss of the ship in the storm?  How do these errors compare to the errors we often make in life that lead to personal shipwrecks?
2. In the middle of the storm, “all hope that we should be saved was then taken away” (v.20).  Compare this with their attitude in verse 13.  How is this actually a step in the right direction?
