Setting a Man Over the Congregation
Scripture Passage:
Numbers 27:15-23 Attached audio files:
Introduction:
Ordination
Ordination is first of all a simple confirmation that God has indeed called a man and that he has faithfully shown the evidences of this call.- He is called by the Holy Ghost
- He is recommended by a presbytery of godly men
- He is placed in office by the local church
- The presbytery examines the man and recommends him to the church.
- The church declares their confidence in the man by virtue of what they have seen in his life and ministry.
- The presbytery places some of their honor on the man until he can, by virtue of his life and labor, earn his own honor.
- THE CALL OF THE MAN OF GOD
- Requested by Moses (Numbers 27:15-16 [15] And Moses spake unto the LORD, saying,
[16] Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,

- Elijah anointing Elisha (1 Kings 19:16And Jehu the son of Nimshi shalt thou anoint to be king over Israel: and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abelmeholah shalt thou anoint to be prophet in thy room.
See All..., 19-21) - We must be seeking laborers (Matthew 9:37-38 [37] Then saith he unto his disciples, The harvest truly is plenteous, but the labourers are few;
[38] Pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest, that he will send forth labourers into his harvest.

See All...) – “Let the LORD…set a man” - God alone knows the heart of every man (Numbers 27:16Let the LORD, the God of the spirits of all flesh, set a man over the congregation,
See All...; 1 Samuel 16:7But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart.
See All...) – “the God of the spirits of all flesh” - God must ultimately do the calling
- Placing into the ministry (1 Timothy 1:12And I thank Christ Jesus our Lord, who hath enabled me, for that he counted me faithful, putting me into the ministry;
See All...) - Sending on a mission (Acts 13:1-4 [1] Now there were in the church that was at Antioch certain prophets and teachers; as Barnabas, and Simeon that was called Niger, and Lucius of Cyrene, and Manaen, which had been brought up with Herod the tetrarch, and Saul.
[2] As they ministered to the Lord, and fasted, the Holy Ghost said, Separate me Barnabas and Saul for the work whereunto I have called them.
[3] And when they had fasted and prayed, and laid their hands on them, they sent them away.
[4] So they, being sent forth by the Holy Ghost, departed unto Seleucia; and from thence they sailed to Cyprus.

- An overseer of the flock (Acts 20:28Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.
See All...) - One who rules (Hebrews 13:7Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation.
See All...; 1 Timothy 3:4-5 [4] One that ruleth well his own house, having his children in subjection with all gravity; [5] (For if a man know not how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)
See All..., 10-13) - A position of responsibility
- His authority is derived from another; he is a steward (1 Corinthians 4:1-2 [1] Let a man so account of us, as of the ministers of Christ, and stewards of the mysteries of God.
[2] Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.
See All...) - As one that must give account (Hebrews 13:17Obey them that have the rule over you, and submit yourselves: for they watch for your souls, as they that must give account, that they may do it with joy, and not with grief: for that is unprofitable for you.
See All...) - The balance of authority and responsibility (1 Peter 5:2-3 [2] Feed the flock of God which is among you, taking the oversight thereof, not by constraint, but willingly; not for filthy lucre, but of a ready mind;
[3] Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
See All...) - He must be a servant first (Matthew 20:25-28 [25] But Jesus called them unto him, and said, Ye know that the princes of the Gentiles exercise dominion over them, and they that are great exercise authority upon them.
[26] But it shall not be so among you: but whosoever will be great among you, let him be your minister;
[27] And whosoever will be chief among you, let him be your servant:
[28] Even as the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister, and to give his life a ransom for many.
See All...; Romans 1:1Paul, a servant of Jesus Christ, called to be an apostle, separated unto the gospel of God,
See All...) - THE QUALIFICATIONS OF THE MAN OF GOD

See All...) - To be an ensample to the flock (1 Peter 5:3Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock.
See All...) - As living in a glass house (1 Samuel 18:12-16 [12] And Saul was afraid of David, because the LORD was with him, and was departed from Saul.
[13] Therefore Saul removed him from him, and made him his captain over a thousand; and he went out and came in before the people.
[14] And David behaved himself wisely in all his ways; and the LORD was with him.

See All...) - But as a steward of God (2 Corinthians 4:1-2 [1] Therefore seeing we have this ministry, as we have received mercy, we faint not;
[2] But have renounced the hidden things of dishonesty, not walking in craftiness, nor handling the word of God deceitfully; but by manifestation of the truth commending ourselves to every man's conscience in the sight of God.
See All...) - To have a vision for the work (Proverbs 29:18Where there is no vision, the people perish: but he that keepeth the law, happy is he.
See All...) - To bring them in (Numbers 27:17Which may go out before them, and which may go in before them, and which may lead them out, and which may bring them in; that the congregation of the LORD be not as sheep which have no shepherd.

See All...) - Note: In 9AD, Quinctilius Varus took three Roman legions into Germany. He foolishly got trapped in a dense German forest and lost the entire army (about 20,000 men). After this disaster, Augustus Caesar was heard repeating over and over, “Quinctilius Varus, give me back my legions!”

[13] Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
See All...); he must be always feeding on the word of God (Jeremiah 15:16Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart: for I am called by thy name, O LORD God of hosts.
See All...) - He must be Spirit-led (Romans 8:16The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:
