This chapter looks forward to the time of the restoration of Israel and the city of Jerusalem.  They are to be “redeemed without money” (v.3) because the servant who suffered (v.13-14) will sprinkle many nations (v.15).  Therefore, they should awake (v.1), shake themselves (v.2), sing together (v.9), and depart from the unclean thing (v.11).

1. Verses seven and eleven are quoted in the New Testament.  Where are they quoted?  What do these verses mean here in Isaiah?  To what does they specifically refer in the New Testament?
2. What is the meaning of “rereward” in verse twelve [check a good dictionary; “rereward” is another spelling for “rearward” and is related to “rear guard”]?  In what way is God the rereward of Israel?
3. To whom does verse fourteen refer?  What is the verse talking about?

What Does It Mean to Me?

1. This chapter has two repeated commands.  “Awake, awake” (v.1) and “Depart ye, depart ye” (v.11).  Why are these particular commands repeated?  What is their significance?
