Scripture Passage:
Genesis 7:1-24

In this chapter, God sent the flood that destroyed all breathing beings on the face of the earth. But first, He ensured the deliverance of Noah, his family, and all kinds of animals by shutting them in the ark Noah had built in obedience to God’s commandment.

What Does It Say?

  1. Noah was told to take the animals by twos or by sevens in order to keep _________ alive upon the _________ of all the earth.
  2. Noah was ________ hundred years old when the flood of waters came on the earth.
  3. The flood began in the _________ month, on the ____________ day of the month.
  4. The rain came down on the earth for _________ days and __________ nights.
  5. In the ark, Noah preserved two and two of all flesh, wherein is the _________ of life.

What Does It Mean?

  1. Why do you think that Noah was told to preserve unclean beasts by twos, but clean beasts by sevens (Genesis 7:2-3)? Read Genesis 8:18-20 and see if this helps you with your answer.
  2. Genesis 7:11 mentions two sources of water for the flood. Read the verse and see if you can tell what these two sources are.
  3. Genesis 7:20 states, “Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains were covered.” Fifteen cubits is about 22 and 1/2 feet, or less than seven meters. This could not be referring to the height of the flood from sea level and still be a worldwide flood. Yet, the verse says that the mountains were covered. What do you think is being measured here? Consider that the word, prevail, means to overcome or to gain the advantage over something.

What Does It Mean to Me?

  1. The Lord told Noah that He brought him and his house into the ark, “for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation” (Genesis 7:1). Paul preached of David who had “served his own generation by the will of God” (Acts 13:36). Generally speaking, a generation refers to the group of people living at any given time. What should our relationship be to our generation? In what ways can we serve it? What do we have to do in order to be righteous in it?
  2. When Noah got in the ark with his family and the animals, “the LORD shut him in” (Genesis 7:16). Preachers throughout the ages have used the ark of Noah as a picture of salvation. How does this verse fit with that picture? In what other ways is the ark and the deliverance of Noah and family like the salvation that is provided through Jesus Christ?
