The New Testament Church 0002 - Lesson 5
Its Ordinances (Continued)
- INTRODUCTION TO WATER BAPTISM (Continued)
- What It Is Not. (Continued)
- It is not the baptism with the Holy Ghost.
- The breakdown of this baptism (Acts 1:5For John truly baptized with water; but ye shall be baptized with the Holy Ghost not many days hence.
See All...; Matthew 3:11I indeed baptize you with water unto repentance. but he that cometh after me is mightier than I, whose shoes I am not worthy to bear: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost, and with fire:
See All...; Luke 3:16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
See All...) - The administrator: Jesus Christ
- The subject: Believers at Pentecost
- The medium: The Holy Ghost
- The historical event
- To understand the baptism with the Holy Ghost, you must understand that it was an event.
- Acts 1:6When they therefore were come together, they asked of him, saying, Lord, wilt thou at this time restore again the kingdom to Israel?
See All... teaches that the baptism with the Holy Ghost would occur “not many days hence.” - This baptism occurred in Acts chapter two on the day of Pentecost.
- On that day, the believing Jews were brought into the baptism with the Holy Ghost.
- Other groups were brought into the baptism with the Holy Ghost at a later date.
- The day of Pentecost gave the Holy Ghost to the Jews.
- The Samaritans received the Holy Ghost in Acts 8:14-17 [14] Now when the apostles which were at Jerusalem heard that Samaria had received the word of God, they sent unto them Peter and John:
[15] Who, when they were come down, prayed for them, that they might receive the Holy Ghost:
[16] (For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
[17] Then laid they their hands on them, and they received the Holy Ghost.
See All.... - The Gentiles were baptized with the Holy Ghost in Acts 10:44-48 [44] While Peter yet spake these words, the Holy Ghost fell on all them which heard the word.
[45] And they of the circumcision which believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because that on the Gentiles also was poured out the gift of the Holy Ghost.
[46] For they heard them speak with tongues, and magnify God. Then answered Peter,
[47] Can any man forbid water, that these should not be baptized, which have received the Holy Ghost as well as we?
[48] And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
See All.... - Finally, one little side group who had been following John’s baptism received the Holy Ghost in Acts 19:1-7 [1] And it came to pass, that, while Apollos was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,
[2] He said unto them, Have ye received the Holy Ghost since ye believed? And they said unto him, We have not so much as heard whether there be any Holy Ghost.
[3] And he said unto them, Unto what then were ye baptized? And they said, Unto John's baptism.
[4] Then said Paul, John verily baptized with the baptism of repentance, saying unto the people, that they should believe on him which should come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.
[5] When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
[6] And when Paul had laid his hands upon them, the Holy Ghost came on them; and they spake with tongues, and prophesied.
[7] And all the men were about twelve.
See All.... - It is not the baptism of the Spirit.
- The breakdown of this baptism (1 Corinthians 12:13For by one Spirit are we all baptized into one body, whether we be Jews or Gentiles, whether we be bond or free; and have been all made to drink into one Spirit.
See All...; Romans 6:3-4 [3] Know ye not, that so many of us as were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into his death? [4] Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
See All...) - The administrator: The Holy Spirit
- The subject: Believers
- The medium: Jesus Christ
- Spirit baptism occurs at the point of salvation and is the event of the Spirit placing the new believer into Jesus Christ.
- Galatians 3:27For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.
See All... states: “For as many of you as have been baptized into Christ have put on Christ.” - THE PROPER MODE OF BAPTISM
- By Immersion
- Seen in the word baptism - From O.Fr. baptizier (11c.), from L. baptizare, from Gk. baptizein "to immerse," in ecclesiastical language – Taken from www.etymonline.com
- Seen in the connection to a burial
- Baptism is likened unto a burial (Romans 6:4Therefore we are buried with him by baptism into death: that like as Christ was raised up from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.
See All...). - We are buried with Christ in baptism (Colossians 2:12Buried with him in baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, who hath raised him from the dead.
See All...). - Note: It is not the contention of this class that these references of baptism are to water baptism, but that the word baptism in general is connected to burials.
- With this being the case, it ought to be obvious that a baptism is to place somebody or something entirely into some other medium.
- Many of the old Baptists called the baptismal waters the “watery grave.”
- The Lord Jesus spoke of His death as a baptism that He was to be baptized with (Matthew 20:22-23 [22] But Jesus answered and said, Ye know not what ye ask. Are ye able to drink of the cup that I shall drink of, and to be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with? They say unto him, We are able.
[23] And he saith unto them, Ye shall drink indeed of my cup, and be baptized with the baptism that I am baptized with: but to sit on my right hand, and on my left, is not mine to give, but it shall be given to them for whom it is prepared of my Father.
See All...; Luke 12:49-50 [49] I am come to send fire on the earth; and what will I if it be already kindled? [50] But I have a baptism to be baptized with; and how am I straitened till it be accomplished!
See All...; John 18:11Then said Jesus unto Peter, Put up thy sword into the sheath: the cup which my Father hath given me, shall I not drink it?
See All...). - Seen in the baptisms in Scripture
- John baptized where there was “much water” (John 3:23And John also was baptizing in Aenon near to Salim, because there was much water there: and they came, and were baptized.
See All...). - At the baptism of the Lord Jesus, John and the Lord both went into the water and came “up straightway out of the water” (Matthew 3:16And Jesus, when he was baptized, went up straightway out of the water: and, lo, the heavens were opened unto him, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove, and lighting upon him:
See All...). - People were baptized of John “in the river of Jordan” (Mark 1:5And there went out unto him all the land of Judaea, and they of Jerusalem, and were all baptized of him in the river of Jordan, confessing their sins.
See All...). - Water baptism, spirit baptism and baptism of fire are mentioned together (Luke 3:16John answered, saying unto them all, I indeed baptize you with water; but one mightier than I cometh, the latchet of whose shoes I am not worthy to unloose: he shall baptize you with the Holy Ghost and with fire:
See All...). No matter what the arguments are otherwise, all should be willing to admit that the baptism of fire is by immersion (Revelation 20:14-15 [14] And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. [15] And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.
See All...). - Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch both went down into the water and the eunuch was baptized; then both came up out of the water (Acts 8:36-39 [36] And as they went on their way, they came unto a certain water: and the eunuch said, See, here is water; what doth hinder me to be baptized?
[37] And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.
[38] And he commanded the chariot to stand still: and they went down both into the water, both Philip and the eunuch; and he baptized him.
[39] And when they were come up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord caught away Philip, that the eunuch saw him no more: and he went on his way rejoicing.
See All...). - In the Name of
- The meaning of this phrase
- To do something "in the name of" someone else means to do it by his/her authority (Deuteronomy 18:5-7 [5] For the LORD thy God hath chosen him out of all thy tribes, to stand to minister in the name of the LORD, him and his sons for ever.
[6] And if a Levite come from any of thy gates out of all Israel, where he sojourned, and come with all the desire of his mind unto the place which the LORD shall choose;
[7] Then he shall minister in the name of the LORD his God, as all his brethren the Levites do, which stand there before the LORD.
See All..., 20-22; Esther 3:12Then were the king's scribes called on the thirteenth day of the first month, and there was written according to all that Haman had commanded unto the king's lieutenants, and to the governors that were over every province, and to the rulers of every people of every province according to the writing thereof, and to every people after their language; in the name of king Ahasuerus was it written, and sealed with the king's ring.
See All...). - It can also refer to doing something in the place of another (Deuteronomy 25:6And it shall be, that the firstborn which she beareth shall succeed in the name of his brother which is dead, that his name be not put out of Israel.
See All...). - The words given by the Lord Jesus - “Baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:” (Matthew 28:19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
See All...) - The baptisms of the apostles
- “Be baptized . . . in the name of Jesus Christ” (Acts 2:38Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.
See All...). - “They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 8:16(For as yet he was fallen upon none of them: only they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.)
See All...). - “Baptized in the name of the Lord” (Acts 10:48And he commanded them to be baptized in the name of the Lord. Then prayed they him to tarry certain days.
See All...) - “They were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus” (Acts 19:5When they heard this, they were baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus.
See All...). - Conclusions
- We are to baptize converts under the authority of the Trinity, but specifically the Lord Jesus Christ who gave the commandment.
- This is not meant to be a formula, but if it were, it would be wise to heed the words of the Lord Jesus and to baptize in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost (Matthew 28:19Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost:
