Leadership Comes with Responsibility

Leadership Comes with Responsibility - James 3:1

INTRODUCTION

Many people see the glory of leadership, but fail to realize that leadership comes with a greater responsibility. A student is responsible for his own studies, while a teacher is responsible for his own studies in addition to how he leads his students. A pastor who can’t rule well his own home has no business taking on the added responsibility of taking care of the church of God (1 Timothy 3:4-5). An employee within a company is responsible to God for his own work, but the owner of the company is responsible for leading and caring for every individual effected by the company. With these truths in mind, it is easy to understand why James would suggest that believers consider the responsibility that accompanies leadership.

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

  • (For smaller children) Being a leader is not easy. David's men were upset with him when the Amalekites burned their city and stole their goods and families. This was not David's fault, but as a leader, he cared for and wanted to help the men. He prayed to God first for answers and then led the men to victory.
  • What is the level of responsibility that you currently bear? Whom are you responsible for leading? Are you leading those people in the right direction? If not, what might be the consequences?
  • How should the responsibility of leadership bring sobriety? How should it effect the decisions that we make and the way that we make those decisions?

PRAYER NEEDS

  • Ask the Lord to show you the responsibility of leadership.
  • Ask God to give you wisdom in leading others.
