INTRODUCTION

The word but indicates that our verse is a continuation of the thought in the previous verse. In that verse, the "natural man," someone who does not know the Lord as Saviour, cannot discern the things of God. In our passage, the "spiritual judgeth all things." A spiritual man is a man who not only knows the Lord, but is enjoying the peace of God and fellowship with the Lord. By exclusion, the carnal, saved people who are not in proper fellowship with the Lord (1 Corinthians 3:1And I, brethren, could not speak unto you as unto spiritual, but as unto carnal, even as unto babes in Christ.
See All...), have the ability to discern because they know the Lord, but fail in the proper execution. For anyone to say that believers should not judge is foolish. A spiritual man will judge all things, but he will do so based upon righteous judgment (John 7:24Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment.

• (For smaller children) Solomon prayed that the Lord would show him who was right or wrong as he judged the people (1 Kings 3:9Give therefore thy servant an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad: for who is able to judge this thy so great a people?

[25] And the king said, Divide the living child in two, and give half to the one, and half to the other. [26] Then spake the woman whose the living child was unto the king, for her bowels yearned upon her son, and she said, O my lord, give her the living child, and in no wise slay it. But the other said, Let it be neither mine nor thine, but divide it. [27] Then the king answered and said, Give her the living child, and in no wise slay it: she is the mother thereof.

• Do you judge others? Upon what do you base your judgment? Are you able to discern between right and wrong, truth and error? If not, why?
• Have you trusted the Lord as your Saviour? If so, would you consider yourself a carnal believer or a spiritual believer? Upon what do you base your thoughts?

• Ask the Lord to help you be spiritual in all matters.
• Ask the Lord to teach you proper judgment.
