Someone has counted seven different sets of instructions concerning the tabernacle in the book of Exodus. Each set of instructions repeats some things and adds others. This approach is part of God’s special design for the book of Exodus, but it can confuse the casual reader. In order to make the tabernacle more understandable, this lesson follows topics more than the text. Haggai 1:13 states: "Then spake Haggai the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message unto the people, saying, I am with you, saith the LORD." The prophet Haggai is "the LORD'S messenger in the LORD'S message." As much as we try, we can never competely separate the man from the message he brings. When the watchman saw Ahimaaz running toward the city with a message, David said, "He is a good man, and cometh with good tidings" (2 Samuel 18:27). He knew the message was good because the man was good. What kind of message do people expect from you. When you bring a message from the Lord, are you in the Lord's message?

Zechariah sees the vision of the golden candlestick and the two olive trees. The olive oil is a picture of the work of the Holy Spirit. God accomplishes His work, not by might or by power, but by the working of His Spirit. The entire vision centers on this truth.

Zechariah prophesied at the same time as Haggai. He spoke to the Israelites who had returned to Jerusalem from Babylon. The message of this book is one of encouragement. It looks forward to the restoration of Israel and the coming of the Messiah. The visions recorded in Zechariah are often thought to be difficult to understand. Though the Israelites had become unclean, yet by their obedience to the Lord in building the temple they will bring blessings upon themselves both in the near future and in the time to come.

The prophet Haggai encourages the Israelites who have returned from Babylonian captivity as they build the temple
