God as the Rock (Daily Portion 10327)
Scripture Passage:
Deuteronomy 32:1-27 This chapter records the song of Moses that God gave to him as a teaching tool for the children of Israel. Do not look for stanzas of the hymn, for it has none. Instead, this song is built around the theme of God as the Rock who is superior to all other rocks.
WHAT DOES IT SAY?
- This passage speaks of a time them the most High divided to the nations their ______________ and when He separated the sons of __________.
- God led Israel in the wilderness as an __________ stirs up her nest and bears her young on her wing.
- The Lord so blessed Israel in the wilderness so as to make him suck ___________ out of the rock and _________ out of the flinty rock.
- God refers to Israel as a very forward _____________, children in whom is no _________.
- A fire is kindled in God’s anger and shall burn unto the lowest ________.
WHAT DOES IT MEAN?
- The theme of the song of Moses is that the God of Israel is the Rock who is superior to all other rocks. The word rock is used 9 times in the song in at least three different ways: see verses 4, 13, 15, 18, 30, 31, 37. Read the verses and tell the different ways in which the word is used in the song. Also, give characteristics of a rock that would apply to God as the Rock.
- Verse 14 refers to “the pure blood of the grape.” What is the connection between a grape and blood? What is meant by the pure blood of the grape? Read Genesis 49:11Binding his foal unto the vine, and his ass's colt unto the choice vine; he washed his garments in wine, and his clothes in the blood of grapes:
See All... and Matthew 26:26-29 [26] And as they were eating, Jesus took bread, and blessed it, and brake it, and gave it to the disciples, and said, Take, eat; this is my body. [27] And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and gave it to them, saying, Drink ye all of it; [28] For this is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins. [29] But I say unto you, I will not drink henceforth of this fruit of the vine, until that day when I drink it new with you in my Father's kingdom.
See All.... What else do you see about this subject in these passages? - “They sacrificed unto devils, not to God” (v.17). What does it mean that they sacrificed to devils? Compare Leviticus 17:7And they shall no more offer their sacrifices unto devils, after whom they have gone a whoring. This shall be a statute for ever unto them throughout their generations.
See All...; Psalm 106:37-38 [37] Yea, they sacrificed their sons and their daughters unto devils, [38] And shed innocent blood, even the blood of their sons and of their daughters, whom they sacrificed unto the idols of Canaan: and the land was polluted with blood.
See All...; 1Corinthians 10:20But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.
See All...; Revelation 9:20And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
See All.... What is the connection between devils and false gods?
WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ME?
- Moses states, “My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass.” What is doctrine? How does it work in our lives? What is Moses describing here?
- Verse 9 states, “For the LORD'S portion is his people; Jacob is the lot of his inheritance.” The portion here refers to the portion of the inheritance given to someone. God’s portion is His people. That is, they are His inheritance (this compares well with Acts 15:14Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name.
See All...). What is your inheritance as a believer? According to this verse, what is God’s inheritance? What do you think that means? How should this effect your life as a Christian?
SUGGESTED MEMORY VERSES:
Deuteronomy 32:2My doctrine shall drop as the rain, my speech shall distil as the dew, as the small rain upon the tender herb, and as the showers upon the grass:

Proverbs 28:27
He that giveth unto the poor shall not lack: but he that hideth his eyes shall have many a curse.
