Favour in the Sight of God and Man

Favour in the Sight of God and Man

INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS

Men not only develop reputations among other men, but they also develop a reputation with the Lord. A wise individual seeks “favour and good understanding in the sight of God and man.” Fortunately, the path to favour in the sight of God follows the same course as that of finding favour in the sight of the right kind of men. According to Proverbs 3:1-3, these elements include remembrance of God’s law, keeping the commandments, and forsaking not mercy and truth. Before dismissing the importance of this dual favour amongst both God and man, consider that the scriptures inform us that the Lord Jesus increased in wisdom leading to an increase in “favour with God and man.”

DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS

(For children):Samuel grew in favour with God and man (1 Samuel 2:11, 26), as did Daniel (Daniel 1:8-9; Daniel 6:3), as did Joseph (Genesis 39:3-4, 21-23). Consider Romans 14:17-18.

(For everyone):Who are some others in scripture that found good favour in the sight of God and man? How did their reputations help them find favour?

(For everyone):Why is it important to have a good reputation with the Lord and amongst the right kind of people? How much is your reputation based upon your own efforts?

PRAYER THOUGHTS

Ask the Lord to help you find favour in His sight.

Ask God to show you His path to a good reputation.
