Discretion Defers Anger
Discretion Defers Anger
Proverbs 19:11 The discretion of a man deferreth his anger; and it is his glory to pass over a transgression.
INTRODUCTORY THOUGHTS
Be sure to carefully read today’s verse. A basic definition of discretion refers to someone who seeks out knowledge concerning a conflict and then uses wisdom to arrive at the right decision. On the other hand, ungodly anger unwisely reacts without discretion. It is therefore logical that discretion defers anger. Any individual who thrives on anger often does so by neglecting knowledge and wisdom. He fails to patiently consider every perspective and detail before rushing to judgment fueling his fury. Discretion may delay a reaction, but when one does react using discretion, his reaction will be righteous and helpful for all involved even when his reaction might involve anger.
DEVOTIONAL THOUGHTS
(For children):The Lord was treated badly. Look what He could have done (Matthew 26:53-54), but look what He chose to do (Isaiah 53:5-6). Consider these other cases where the person could have become angry: Joseph with his brothers (Genesis 50:15-21); David with Saul (1 Samuel 24:3-7; 1 Samuel 26:5-11).
(For everyone):How could your implementing some amount of discretion keep you from getting angry? What conditions exist most often when you do find yourself angry?
(For everyone):Read James 1:19. What does this verse teach about anger? How could this verse reduce the amount of time you are angry?
PRAYER THOUGHTS
Ask God to give you discretion.
Ask the Lord to give you power over anger.
